Middle Grades Education
Class of 2012

Collectively, we are a group of pre-service middle school teachers hoping to learn from ourselves and others, whether it be through personal interaction or Tumblr.

This blog is designed to be an inviting place for all members of our cohort to share their experiences, resources, accomplishments, etc.

For the record, this blog is in no way, shape or form officially associated with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, nor their School of Education.

The "F" Word: Flexibility!

So you think you're a reader? Think again. Owning a stack of books doesn’t make you a reader. It makes you an owner of paper printed with ink. Reading is not merely finishing something lengthy. Reading is feeling what transpires within the pages of that thick 500 page novel of yours. Feeling what the characters feel. Do more than read. Live out what you read.

teachingliteracy:

Guilty as charged. I own stacks of books. Thanks to the internet, I now “own” hundreds of e-books. I keep saying that I am going to get around to reading them…

Challenge yourself to become a reader and not a book collector!

teachingliteracy:

Now that I’ve posted this I start wondering:

- 86% can read English or 86% can read in their native language?

- Are the 14% that can’t read including those cultures that don’t have a written language?

I NEED ANSWERS!!!1

matthen:

142857 is one of my favourite numbers- check out what happens when you multiply it by 2, 3, 4, etc. Multiplying it by 7 gives the key to this number, it is 999,999. That means that 7 times 0.142857142857… would be 0.999999999999…, also known as “1”. Therefore 0.142857… is a seventh, 0.285714… is 2/7 etc. By memorising the order of these 6 numbers, you can now divide by 7 with no calculator to infinite precision! You can also now divide by 14. For example 3/14 is a tenth of 30/14, and 30/14 is 15/7 which is 2+1/7 = 2.142857… so the answer is 0.2142857… Also note that 22/7 is pretty close to pi!

This is a day’s lesson for high schoolers.

Some solid, practical advice. Here are the first three:

Don’t Vent About Students

You may forget that the student you’re ranting about is a friend of one of your friends, and might still be able to see your status updates.

Find Out If Your School Has A Social Media Policy

Some universities now have policies for faculty use of social media: You may not be allowed to friend students or discuss work at all, even on your private account, so make sure before you update your profile.

Use Facebook As A Backup Tool

If class is canceled because of bad weather, direct students to Facebook, and send out course materials, readings, and discussion questions so that your class doesn’t fall behind.

gjmueller:

Enjoying that book you’re reading in your Major British Writers class this summer? If you want to discover other authors you may like Literature Map.

How to integrate Literature Map into the classroom: Isn’t it wonderful to find an author that you can’t get enough of? Literature Map helps students in the discovery of new authors based on authors they know they like. Tools like Literature Map can act as a catalyst in uncovering the love for reading. Literature Map would be a great site to bookmark on classroom computers or in the library. Students won’t be stuck in the “I don’t know what to read” or the “I can’t find anything to read” rut.

In the intermediate classroom or middle/high school classroom, ask students to choose two authors from the Literature Map to compare and contrast. Students can dig into writing style, genre and author study as they compare/contrast.

Too often we assume that that the only way to explain complicated concepts in science is to use words. And then we take those words and we add more words, occasionally putting tiny, boring pictures next to them to break up the text into easily digestible chunks.

That’s not very exciting to most people, even me, a professional scientist.

That’s why this feature on the language of smell by Perrin Ireland is so much fun. Perrin is an illustrator who recently has been turning lectures into illustrated lessons. It’s a really fun change of pace from the “normal” way we learn science, and you should check out the whole lesson on smell. If only my textbooks had been like this …

(I am trying to get Perrin to set up a Tumblr, cross your fingers!)

…this makes me want to go back to comicking so badly. I was going to be doing miniature comic cookbook pamphlets, but maybe I ought to do some lesson-related comics just to get warmed up. What subject to start with….

In these interviews distinguished teachers share their strategies and techniques. Good teaching is more often honored in rhetoric than reality. And great teachers are generally known locally within their own schools, but less often to a larger group of national colleagues. Our goal in this section is, in part, to identify and honor those people who have taught with excellence, dedication, and distinction. But more than that, we believe that these teachers have lessons to offer the rest of us and that there are remarkably few forums for hearing their wisdom.
